Healthy aging
Have you ever been on a brain diet?
No, it’s not a diet where you eat brains! It’s a change in eating so that you consume all the essential nutrients for your brain to function optimally.
You will get older: That’s a fact. You can’t change this reality.
What you do have control over is what you put into your body. Everything you consume affects your body in some way. Being aware of this allows you to choose a healthier diet that helps you to thrive as you age.
To survive, you have to eat food. You need it for nourishment, but many people consume food because they love the delicious taste instead of focusing on what it does to their bodies.
There is no problem with eating. The bigger issue is that you have to feed your body food that is good for it and promotes your mental and physical health. When you don’t consume food in this way, you put yourself at risk of poor health, and that is the real issue.
What is your favorite food?
If it’s refined sugar or carbohydrates; alcohol; or something fried, then we need to talk. All of these foods (and many others) can damage your brain and body in the long run because they increase inflammation and the presence of free radicals.
Refined sugar and carbohydrates contribute to insulin resistance and put you at risk of developing diabetes. Alcohol affects judgment and damages the liver. Fried foods are packed with unhealthy fats resulting in obesity and fatty liver disease.
These foods are just the tip of the iceberg but the ones that most people tend to favor. By eating unhealthy foods, you are withholding essential nutrients from your body and brain. Without them, your brain cannot function properly, and you can’t think clearly.
Across the globe, a large proportion of people are getting older. Age brings its own troubles, and one of them is the possibility of developing some kind of dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease).
Dementia refers to a group of diseases that causes cell degeneration in the brain. It means you can no longer think properly, make sound decisions, or remember things very well. There is no cure for most forms of dementia.
After numerous research studies, scientists found that people can slow down and prevent dementia if they change their diets.
It is never too late or too early to start thinking about healthy aging. Changing your diet sooner will have the most benefits. It’s time to take your health seriously and give your brain the best chance at proper functioning for healthy aging.
Your brain is the control center for your body. It directs everything that happens in it. If it were a building, you would be sure to do the necessary maintenance and improvements for it to serve its purpose.
Give your brain this same amount of attention so that it is in the best shape possible and a space you are proud of. One way to do this is to learn more about nutrition and its impact on the brain by signing up for our training on Winning the Game of Weight Loss.
Research has proven that a proper diet can keep you healthier and mentally alert as you age. There is a bunch of information about the topic, but it all comes down to a similar idea: Eat a variety of natural foods.
The brain uses about 20% of the oxygen in the body, but this gives rise to free radicals. These unstable molecules are responsible for cell deterioration throughout the body and in the brain.
When your body has a weak spot in it, like with an injury or infection, that area becomes inflamed as part of the healing process. However, excessive inflammation is bad for the body and also causes cell damage.
You need to eat foods that fight these free radicals and inflammation from causing havoc. This is where healthy, nutritious meals come into the picture.
Although all kinds of nutrients are necessary for brain health, two types promote proper functioning and decrease the rate of cognitive decline: carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids.
Carotenoids are found in the colors of different plants and responsible for pigmentation, but they also do wonders at fighting free radicals in the brain. They soak them up instead of allowing them to roam freely and cause damage.
Omega-3 fatty acids assist with clearing up and preventing inflammation in the body. These fatty acids also promote general brain health and healthy aging.
Both carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids reduce oxidative stress and inflammation resulting in enhanced cognitive performance.
Making better food choices allows you to get more out of your brain. You are protecting it and looking after it so that it stays in good shape as you get older.
Adding carotenoids and omega-3 fatty acids to your diet enables your brain to perform better, gives you more energy, and leaves you mentally prepared to face any challenge you might come across.
When you are positive about life, your mental health is also in a better place. Your mindset changes simply because you think more clearly. It is a position that gives you a greater opportunity at achieving your goals.
A huge advantage of eating for brain health is that you will lose weight. Feeding your body nutritious foods and less junk always results in a lower weight. Join us at our Winning the Game of Weight Loss training for even better results.
Let’s get into the details of what you need to eat for better brain health: as many naturally-found foods as possible. In other words, ditch any food containing ingredients you can’t pronounce because they are probably full of processed junk.
Start by keeping it quite simple and choosing foods that are better for your health. The easiest option is to make choices based on whether they contain excessive sugar, refined carbohydrates, or bad fats.
For instance, if you go for lunch and have to choose between a salad or fish and chips, then go for the salad. Pick a bottle of water instead of a sugary drink when you stop for a beverage. Small changes like these can make a big difference to your brain.
Be mindful of what you put into your body. Before taking a bite or buying any food, ask yourself whether it is really necessary and beneficial for you.
Many medical professionals found that the Mediterranean diet is ideal for promoting brain health. Several studies have shown that it can reduce cognitive decline, making it a good choice to prevent dementia-related illnesses.
With this diet, you eat more vegetables, fruits, seeds, whole grains, nuts, extra-virgin olive oil, spices, herbs, potatoes, and seafood. All of these foods are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and carotenoids.
Yogurt, eggs, cheese, and poultry are only consumed occasionally, as they can increase inflammation. Finally, foods that are most prone to causing inflammation and oxidative stress are left to a minimum. These include red meat, processed foods, sugar, refined oils, and refined grains.
A great way to incorporate fresh produce into your day is to search for new recipes. Create a meal plan based on your recipes, and then, buy only the ingredients necessary for each dish.
